If you’re a parent of boys you’ll know that little men are a handful. They bring new challenges every single day, but along with all the mischief comes adorable smiles, squishy hugs and precious giggles to make it all worthwhile. Cheeky chaps are certainly different from girls in many ways, so here are 10 things only mums and dads of boys will understand.
- There are decent boys clothes out there – but you have to shop around
Head into many clothes stores and you’re likely to find aisles and aisles of pretty girl’s clothes and only one or two racks for boys. Many of the garments will also be blue. Don’t despair, the good news is sites like LamaLoLi offer a far better range than the high street, so it’s worth looking around.
- Anything with wheels is a hit
When it comes to boys, anything with wheels tends to be a hit. You name it, they want it with tractors, cars, buses, diggers, trucks, motorbikes, bikes, aeroplanes and trains being top of the list.
- Wheeled toys can kill an afternoon
Give them a wheeled toy of their choice and they can spend hours pushing it around the living room table, rolling it down a slide or simply making up their own games. Painting with cars can also kill some time, so why not give this a go too?
- Ride on toys will make them smile
As well as push along toys, boys also love anything they can ride be it a remote control car, tricycle or scooter. The older they get, the faster they go, the more damaged their beloved toys will be. That’s just life.
- Boys get dirty, a lot!
Little boys like to get dirty – a lot! They’ve a knack of ruining most clothes and often come home with grass stains on their knees and mud-covered trainers.
- The washing never stops
Considering the above point, the washing machine never stops. Finish one load and another is due to go in especially if you have more than one boy living under the same roof!
- They love flashing shoes
Of course, all kids are different, but most boys love flashing shoes – especially when they’re toddlers. They’ll spend hours stomping around looking at the lights and will constantly show off their special footwear to strangers.
- They’re attracted to water
If there’s one tiny puddle in the back garden, you can be sure your boys will find it. They’re attracted to water and love splashing in anything from swimming pools to muddy lakes and there’s very little you can do to stop them. Just put on their wellies and let them go for it.
- Wee will go everywhere
Parents of boys will know they like to save up going to the toilet when you take their nappy off – and this means wee everywhere. It doesn’t get much better as they get older with urine ending up down the side of the potty, on the floor, up the side of the bath and down the walls. In fact, you’re lucky if it doesn’t go in your face.
- Boys like to be free
Once they learn how to take their nappy off there’s no stopping them. It’s fair to say that boys like to be free and will do anything for a bit of naked time. While nappy off time can help with potty training, running around naked isn’t always appropriate, especially if you’re trying to pick other kids up from school or do the weekly shop.
But just remember, boys will be boys and we wouldn’t have them any other way, right?
