We all probably could do with making money go further as there is never enough. Wages aren’t increasing but the cost of living is definitely going up.
- Use Poundland – and other pound shops that are in your area. They sell beauty products, clothes, and groceries and can help your money g further. Just keep an eye on the sell-by dates on the groceries.
- Use a savings app – in the digital age we live in there is an app for everything and I mean everything. Find a savings app that you like and use it and learn How To Manage Your Money .
- Freeze meals – its easy to make just a bit more at dinner time, or even better if you’re watching your weight dish up smaller portions and then freeze leftovers. Ideal for hungry teenagers to be able to grab from the freezer.
- Blankets and candles – my personal favourite and probably the oldest money tip ever. When it gets cold don’t turn up the heating but light candles ( safely) and get the blankets out and save money on the heating.
- Unplug – have a wander around your home and count how many electric things are still plugged in but you’re not using. If your thinking there is none have a rethink as there will be things like microwaves and toasters that aren’t used all the time and could be switched off. Unplugging them when they aren’t in use will save electricity and money.
- Alter your thinking – be grateful for what you have instead of always being jealous of what everyone else has.
- Use price comparison sites – be it for your insurance, utilities or bank accounts. Regularly compare and change when there are savings to be had and not just when you need your money go further.
- More than one bank account – I have 3, a savings account and two general accounts. One I use for household bills and the other is for ‘me’ stuff. Nothing in my me account means I don’t buy for me and the grocery budget doesn’t get spent.
- Online banking – online banking is just about the norm but I also use my bank’s mobile app. I check my account every morning so if anything goes out that shouldn’t I am on top of it straight away.
- Sell what you don’t use – with sites like eBay and Facebook Market Place it’s so easy to sell the stuff you don’t use or need anymore.
- Grow veg – especially salad food like lettuces and tomatoes as they are really easy to grow. If you have a garden make a veg plot and you can even rope in the kids. Small garden or nonexistent there are still lots of things you can grow in pots.
- Budget – create a budget for everything but especially for your grocery shopping. The important bit – stick to it.
- Watch the offers – offers are a good way to save money with offers like buy one get one free. But they are only worth it if you will use the product.
- Have fewer takeouts – takeouts are nice but limit them will save you money but also make you appreciate them more when you do have them.
- Don’t waste water – a quick shower uses less water than a bath. This isn’t so much the case with teenagers though. Try a timer. You might have to resort to banging on bathroom doors and becoming the nagging parent that always goes on about water costs.
- Don’t shop when hungry or emotional – going food shopping when hungry is lethal, just don’t do it you’ll come back with half the shop. Same with any retail shopping when your happy or sad. When you’re happy you won’t care and when you’re sad you’ll buy stuff to cheer yourself up
- Review your expenses regularly – its a good idea to regularly check your expenses so that your aware of whats going out and when.
- Change payment dates – if you are paid monthly it might work best for you to have all your bills go out a few days later so that they are all paid and whats left is what you can spend. If you’re not paid monthly take some time to work out what bills to go out when and move the dates to fit your income paid in dates. Use a planner to schedule out your payment due dates.
- Earn more – if the figures aren’t adding up and you cant reduce spending any more than look at earning more.
- Heat where you are – in winter only heat the rooms you are in.
