If you don’t have a degree or simply can’t afford the blanket £9,000 a year tuition fees that many universities are charging – fear not. There are many fantastic jobs out there that don’t require this higher level of education, so whether you go through a recruiter such as call centre jobs in Manchester or contact companies directly, you’re sure to find the role of your dreams.
Here are five jobs that you can do without being a graduate:
Journalism
Flick through the prospectus of most top universities and you’re sure to find an array of English literature and journalism degrees. While higher education can often land you top jobs within the world of media and reporting, it’s fair to say that experience is highly valued within this sector. It’s a hard nut to crack but if you’re eager, passionate, determined and have an excellent grasp of the English language you can undoubtedly make your mark on this industry – you just need to get one foot in the door by applying for work experience or a non-paid apprenticeship.
Writer
If travelling to the far corners of the world to report the latest news isn’t your idea of fun and you want to become a novelist or poet instead – go for it. You do not need to go to university in order to put your ideas down on paper, so if you have a thrilling story bubbling in your head, why not type it out and send it to an agent or publisher? There are many literary agencies based in the UK, but don’t expect everyone to like and accept your work. Becoming a published author takes time and effort, but patience and persistence could be worth it when your books are lining the shelves.
PR
There’s big money to be made in PR, so if you’re highly organised with excellent communication skills, perhaps this type of role would be right up your street. Essentially, PR involves managing the spread of information between a business and the public, helping to create and maintain company reputations and public perceptions. PR roles tend to be fun, diverse and highly social, so it’s well worth looking into if you like to be kept on your toes.
Health service manager
While you’ll need a degree to become a medical professional such as a nurse or doctor, you can still work for the health service without one. Being a health service manager has been listed one of the highest paying jobs in the UK and you can work your way up to this position from an administrative post by taking in-service training courses – for which you’ll probably need 4-5 GCSEs.
Army recruit
Want to serve your country and lead a well-paid, structured lifestyle that involves travelling the world? Then becoming an army recruit could be the way forward. Of course, being in the armed forces is no walk in the park. You’ll have responsibilities of epic proportions and will be expected to sacrifice many parts of your life to serve the country, but if you’ve always dreamed of joining you can do so without having to struggle through university first.
University can be an enriching and rewarding experience for many, with post-graduates being offered some of the best jobs around. That said, not all careers require a university degree, so if you’d rather skip college and jump straight into the world of work – or simply fancy a career change that’ll help you earn a decent wage without having to get a degree – consider checking out the jobs above.
