Every mum wants her child to have a great bedroom. When they’ve had a bad day at school, are bringing their mates around or are simply looking for somewhere to chill out during the turbulent teenage years, their room is the number one destination – and for that reason, it’s a special place. And while it’s not always easy to design the perfect bedroom if you’re a single mum on a budget, there are definitely ways you can do it.
Simple accessories
Sometimes, simple is better – especially when it comes to sticking to a budget. The great thing about designing a child’s bedroom is that they don’t mind – or even notice – how expensive the items in there are, provided they know that a lot of thought went into sourcing them. By turning the trip to the shops to buy decorations into a day out, you can make sure your kids know that decorating their room is something you care about no matter what the price tag may be.
So why not both head down to your local craft shop or an affordable store and see what funky – and cheap – accessories you can pick up? Bunting, for example, makes a great choice for many bedrooms. Or why not get a chalkboard and some chalk for your child to put up in their room and use as a homework diary or a drawing board?
Play with light
Something you will have to invest in when decorating your child’s room, though, is a window dressing of some kind. Options here include blinds and curtains, although they can be easily damaged – and the cheaper options are particularly at risk. By investing upfront in a pair of durable wooden shutters, you’ll save money in the long run because they’ll last for a long time – and they won’t be quite as vulnerable to spillages and over-excited toddlers as a pair of curtains might be.
Do it yourself
Whatever additional decor you go for, it’s likely that you’ll have to construct something yourself at some stage. Perhaps you’ve invested in a value for money bed from Ikea, or you’ve picked up a second-hand wardrobe that needs a bit of TLC. Whatever items you need to put together, you don’t always need an expert. By consulting some of the detailed, step-by-step tutorials available on sites like YouTube, for example, you can quickly and easily learn how to self-assemble that crucial item, thereby avoiding having to pay someone to do it for you.
By the time everything from expensive wall art to games consoles and toys have been factored in to the equation, decorating a child’s bedroom can soon begin to look like a nightmare for your bank account. But that doesn’t have to be the case. From heading out for a day at the craft shop to choose decoration items to doing the tough work yourself, there are lots of affordable and budget-friendly options. All that matters ultimately is putting thought and effort into the decor – and provided you can do that, there’s no reason why your child won’t love the new look room.
