I don’t know about you, but I can just about see my summer holiday on the horizon! It seems to have taken far too long for summer to get here, but now it’s finally arrived, we can all start to look forward to lots of days in the sun and of course, that family holiday we definitely deserve!
Whether you’re heading somewhere hot and sunny, or you’re exploring a new corner of your home country, there’s nothing more exciting that planning a holiday and enjoying the build up that comes with it. However, many holiday makers find that paying for the holiday is the easy part – especially if they’ve booked well in advance and have been able to pay in small instalments each month – however it seems that it’s the additional spending money that most of us struggle to budget for and find for our holidays. So things like spur of the moment meals out, that extra ice cream for the kids, additional cocktails and fabulous souvenirs can worry our bank balances.
But don’t worry! Here I’ve come up with 4 simple saving hacks that you can try before you go. Have fun!
Take a closer look at your energy bills
If you haven’t switched your energy supplier to a cheaper one, then why not? If your home is heated by oil then check out emo.ie for the very latest oil prices and discounts. Sure, it’s summer and the heating is the last thing on your mind, but now is the time to take advantage of all those deals and super low tariffs! Head online, see how much you can save and pop it straight into your holiday fund!
Don’t hit the high street
There’s nothing more exciting to a toddler – and a fully grown adult – then hitting the high street and buying a new pair of sunglasses, hats, sandals and dresses etc. But, did you know you probably already have a whole holiday wardrobe at home? Most of these things end up hidden behind our thick, heavy winter clothing or lost within the realms of our drawers and cupboards. Before you shop, take stock of what you already have and consider hand-me-downs for the kids. Not only is this kinder to your wallet but also better for the environment too!
Kick the takeaway habit
I know, no one deserves that takeaway and bottle of wine more than you on a Friday night. But, that weekly takeaway habit is an expensive one! Instead of calling up the local takeaway, why not recreate your own at home, or check out a cheaper supermarket alternative. Think of all the extra money you’ll have for meals out on holiday! Yum!
Beware of your streaming services
We all love a good TV show or binging on a box set or three. But all these streaming services aren’t doing your finances any favours. If you’re paying for more than one streaming service then consider cancelling the ones you can live without and save the money instead! You can always catch up on your favourite shows when you return.
