With being a single parent for the last ten years I have learned a few things I might never have learned if I was still married.
1 – I learned that even though life has moved on from the Victorian era, some people’s views haven’t moved with it. Negatively and prejudices against single mums is still out there.
2 – I learned that I am a lot stronger than I ever thought I was.
3 – I learned that there a lot of DIY jobs that I, as a woman, can actually do. I won’t be fobbed off with its man’s job again.
4 – I learned that no matter how much I try there are things I will never understand or be interested in with cars being one of them. Hurray shouts my local garage.
5 – When life seems really hard there are friends that go beyond the call of duty. It’s so important to have a network of friends.
6 – Beans on toast every night is ok, right?
7 – They are days when you think you’re not going to make to the end of the day and days when you think you can take on the world.
8 – I’ve learned that children can survive divorce.
9 – I’ve learned that they are days I crave silence and days I hate silence.
10 – That it doesn’t necessarily get easier just the challenges change daily.
I asked the children if they have learned anything in the last 10 years and this is their contribution.
Daughter – having two homes means you have to be more organized as otherwise, your favorite jeans are at one parent home when you want to wear them and you’re at the other parent’s house.
Son – having two bedrooms means you get nagged to keep two bedrooms tidy.
I have just added 12 Things I have learnt raising a son do have a read.

Hi there,
I have just stumbled across your blog, and as a newly single mother I just wanted to say thanks! Already I can feel myself growing as a person, changing in (positive) ways that I would have been unable to do if I had stayed in a relationship. It is very reassuring to read all the ‘lessons’ you have learned over the years… so thank you!

Hello,
I too have happened upon your blog as a newly single mum and I find it encouraging that you are able to carry out DIY jobs š It’s so true that some friends will go beyond the call of duty. It’s so important to be surrounded by family, true friends and positivity.
