Today has been one of those days. Well the last few days have really. I haven’t stopped. It’s not been anything out of the ordinary just that life/work/kids thing. I am fairly lucky as both my kids are, as I refer to them, free-range types and hardly still for 5 minutes. It’s all good healthy stuff like horse-riding and skateboarding but does mean there is also a healthy supply of dirty washing to always be doing. The bit I don’t get is how in an age when we have more gadgets and labour saving devices then any of our mothers or grandmothers ever had we actually seem to have less time to spare. My mother can remember the first washing machines being affordable to the average household and coming in to the homes. Before that it was hand washing and mangles which took forever and gave your muscles a good work out.
We have microwave meals that are ready in minutes, dishwashers that wash your dishes while you do something else and washing machines to wash our clothes while we do more something else and yet we still complain there aren’t enough hours in the day. I am just to blame as anyone else. I am sat here listening the to the washing machine spinning my not so smalls and the dishwashers doing its best to get rid of all the tomato sauce on last night’s dishes. The shopping was picked off the shelves by I am sure a very nice young lady who then bagged it all up and gave it to a very nice man who then delivered it and carried it from his van to my door. But I am sitting here with one eye on my too do list thinking the list isn’t getting any smaller and wondering what daft time this evening I will finally climb into bed.
Are we really all so much busier or are we busier doing nothing?
