It’s not often I write about food but food bills are one of the simplest and easiest things get some control over. More often then not we are spending far too much on food and a lot of it just gets thrown away. So when I came across a tin of pears in my cupboard and couldn’t think what to do with them ( not even going into the where did they come from bit) I hunted down some ideas as they are in date and surely something edible can be produced from them.
1 – Crumble with blackberries. The good old fashioned standby of crumble. Whack the oven on at 180C or gas mark 4. Whilst that’s warming up drain the pears and chop into pieces. Ina bowl mix 150g/5oz blackberries, the pears, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 4 tbsp caster sugar. Mix it all up so everything coated. Either put in one dish or divide between for bowls.Crumble over the top 150g/5oz flapjack. Then bake for 15 minutes until fruit is soft and flapjack bit crisp. Serve with dollop of cream or ice cream.
2 – Drench in Chocolate. So simple and so yummy. Drain away all the juice from the pears then if your feeling artistic arrange on a plate or just put in bowls. Plonk a scoop of ice cream on top. Melt together 50g/2oz butter, 100g/31/2 oz chocolate and 1 tbsp golden syrup. Once all melted remove from the heat and stir in 150ml/floz double cream. Pour over the pears and ice cream and then decorate with sprinkles of choice on top.
3 – Get Tarty with Pears. Get your oven warming up to gas mark 8/230C. Pop a baking sheet on the top shelf to warm up. Unroll a 375g pack of ready-rolled puff pastry onto some baking paper. With a knife score a line around the edge to make a frame. Drain the pears and slice them up. Scatter over the pastry keeping inside of your scored frame. Then scatter over some goats cheese and roughly chopped walnuts. Brush the frame with beaten egg and place on the hot baking sheet in the overn. After 15 to 20 mins have a check, the pastry should be golden brown and well risen. Serve hot.
