According to online estate agents HouseSimple.com the cost of estate agent fees for an average UK home costing £160,000 is £7,680 after VAT. There are numerous ways of cutting costs, including using online sellers. When you see this list of items that you could spend your agency fee savings on, you’ll be desperately looking for alternative way of selling your home:
A new car
At the time of writing, Autotrader lists more than 200,000 cars costing £7,500 or less, including 14,367 saloons, 9,294 convertibles and 5,601 coupes. Around 13,000 have travelled 100 miles or less, and many are brand new, meaning that your cash can go a long way.
10 Mac books
A new Apple Macbook Air with 4gb or RAM and an 11.6” screen is around £750. So for the cost of an average estate agent sale you’d be able to put a couple in each room of your home, or stock out a small business. Throw in an online security device (which might be used on multiple machines) and you’ll have a wall of technology perfect for surfing and looking for nearby entertainment for your new home.
Eight season tickets
…if you support Arsenal, which for the 2014/15 season posted season ticket prices at £1,014. That would leave you with £582, with which you could also pick up a Manchester City season ticket (£299) and still have a few bob left over.
66 bottles of Dom Perignon 2005
One of the cheaper labels to be found on a website of the legendary champagnes; if one were to enjoy a bottle a week from now, it would take the drinking spree into late autumn. There are numerous vintages that would blow all the savings in one go, and more, such as the £12,000 for a bottle of Cocoonase.
One hundred luxury John Lewis hampers
A Hotel Chocolat Chocolate and Prosecco Hamper boasting such sweet names as Milk Oblivion Sleekster costs £75, so one could really splash out for gifts for the summer for a vast number of friends.
A family beach holiday
Seven nights of paradise in the Maldives can cost from as little as £1,000 per person, including all meals. So potentially seven friends/family members could spend time gliding along the coral reefs before eating spectacular world-class cuisine, with £500 left in your pocket at the end. Glorious options for Seychelles, Mauritius and other fabulous idylls are also available.
Adventure trek
If the Indian Ocean seems a little sedate for your tastes, then consider an adventure trek that will provide memories for a lifetime. Or several; Mt Kilimanjaro (£1,890) and New Year in Antarctica (£5633) combined will still provide you with a total under the magic £7,680. Admittedly, once you’ve negotiated those two epic voyages you’ll probably be too exhausted to sell your home…
768 KFC bargain buckets (6 pieces)
At just over £10 you’d have enough cash to buy one bucket a day for the next two years and a month, and if you can make it that far you probably deserve the money. Other options include 2,855 Big Macs (in the UK, anyway) and 5,120 packs of Pizza Express dough balls from Tesco.
