When I first started with the running I knew I would have to push myself each week but I wasn’t prepared or had thought about the actual ‘getting past a hurdle bit’. I didn’t think about them at all.
My last run yesterday was the first one of week 4. The observant will have spotted that my weeks don’t tally with when I started as you are supposed to do 3 runs a week with a rest day in between. So I should be just starting week 3. Of course, I never do anything by the rules and I have skipped a few rest days. But I was finding some of the days easy and wanted to push myself.
Now, week 4 is run for 3 minutes, walk, run for 5 minutes, walk, run 3 minutes, walk and then run for 5 minutes. Me run for a whole 5 minutes, really? I was really nervous as the app told me what I was about to do and was very sure I would give up. The first 5 minutes were actually fairly easy. My lungs didn’t feel like they were on fire and I was still in vertical position. Positive points all round I think. The second 5-minute run was a hard. I struggled. But like matey chops on the app said you feel better for keep going. And I did it. I got over the hurdle. 5 minutes was where I thought I honestly would give up. The high afterwards was amazing.
But then they say most of the fear is the fear itself and not the actual thing you are worried about. I feared the thought of the 5 minutes running than actually doing the run. When it came to the run I just got on with it.
Next hurdle is taking the running out side. Now that I know I can run for 5 minutes, I wont look quite as odd running/walking outside as I figured it takes less than 5 minutes for a car to go past. So my thinking is not so many people will see me do the walking bit. Someone in running gear walking always does look odd.
So by my next post I hope to have braved the outdoors.
