While we’re aware of the challenges faced by new mums, how many of us can imagine what it would be like to have a newborn and be amongst the top women poker players in the world? Quite a balancing act, to say the least! Since we’re on the subject, let’s meet Adrienne Rowsome. Not only is she an inspiration to the rest of us, she’s one of the PokerStars’ top successes and one of the busiest players. Let’s look at a recent interview to see how’s she’s managing to juggle being a new mum while pursuing her career as a professional poker playing.
Right off, Adrienne mentions that as a new mummy she spends almost every minute, day and night, attending to her little one. We can certainly understand that! Not only is she caring for her baby, she understands the importance of breastfeeding and health. She doesn’t believe in handing off the baby while she plays. Adrienne places so much emphasis on this that she looks to professionals and other mums for support. When it comes to her baby’s other needs, her husband helps with basic chores and tasks such as nappy changes and bathing.
As far as poker, serious play has been placed on hold. While she tried to devote a couple of hours each day to her career that fell by the wayside, since the needs of baby Rowsome come first. She admits that since her son was born, her poker VIP player points (VVP) has fallen off considerably. Now that the little guy has reached his fourth month, Adrienne hopes to see her VPP pick up. She continues to play on her iPad and iPhone while the baby develops a more regular routine. She plans to share, and shift, responsibilities with her husband as time progresses.
As far as their social life, Adrienne admits that most activities revolve around activities at home. They play games, invite dinner guests and watch movies. Although they do go to restaurants occasionally, their son is in tow. She added that when they go out they take their own car, just in case they ‘have to make an exit.’ We’ve all been there and done that, right? She says that while they enjoy hosting visitors and entertaining, their guests are very accommodating and willing to carry on with their own leisure activities.
Adrienne manages most of her online sponsorship responsibilities. These include blogging, playing, and social media… while breastfeeding. Twitter and Facebook, as we well known, are very task oriented, so she’s able to keep up with her fans. She brainstorms blog ideas with her husband, who is very supportive of her efforts.
Rowsome says that being a mum supersedes all other events. She attributes her ability to handle her new life to preparations she made prior to her son’s birth, as well as the support of her husband, friends, fans and poker team. She concludes that while she still plans to play poker, she is “certain that there will be many changes.” However, she will pursue these goals based on sound values. Here, here, Adrienne, we’re happy that you’ve got your priorities straight!
