Teens have a lot of stuff, that’s a well known fact, and usually this ‘stuff’ will end up on the floor, on the walls, on every surface in the room and even spilling out of cupboards and drawers. But if you’re savvy with space, you could prevent this unruly mess from ever happening. Here are some bedroom space saving tips for your pubescent bundles of joy:
Look under the bed
Under bed storage is a great option. Not only does it prevent a build up of rubbish forming from under the mattress, as well as copious amounts of dust, but it allows your teen to keep those items they don’t use very often neat and tucked away. Look for plastic boxes with wheels that can be easily pushed under and pulled out from under the bed or a divan bed with storage included in the design.
Move some stuff out
To save space you should encourage your teen to have a big clear out and if there’s any furniture they don’t need, consider popping it in a small storage unit to get it out of the way – companies such as Alligator Storage offer great rates on units as small as 15sq ft. Of course, when the initial de-clutter occurs your teenager won’t want you around, so make yourself scarce as they try to find a new hiding place for their diary.
Segregate areas in the room
Ensure it’s clear where the relaxing and sleeping should go on and set up a functional desk area for studying and perhaps extend this into a dressing table too. Space can be saved if it’s clear what each area is intended for, so nothing gets moved around and re-clutters up the room too much.
Pick up multifunctional furniture
Simple solutions such as bookshelves that can double up as desks and wardrobes with mirrors built into the doors will help save valuable space in your teenager’s room. As teenagers get older they’ll start asking for a double bed so ensure you clear the room for this potential future purchase.
Shelving can fix any problem
Does your teenager need somewhere to store their nail varnish? Or their growing Funko Pop collection? Then cube shelves can be put up around the room and provide an ideal space for them to feature and store their favourite items, removing them from drawers and cupboards to create even more storage space. It’s an inexpensive method of storage and can even be used as another way of decorating the room in a creative way. Give them somewhere they can fill with their stuff and it won’t be left to litter the floor and desk space.
Go wireless
Extension leads and plugs across the floor are not only trip hazards but take up space on desks. Instead, pick up a wireless docking unit that can be used for smartphones and other portable devices – Ikea’s range is small, efficient and looks great. You can even pick up furniture with the charging units integrated to create a seamless, mess free look in the room.
When it comes to transforming your teenager’s room into a space saving haven consider some of these tips and enjoy the extra wiggle room they can create.
