It’s all very well living in a modern (ish) house but when they built this house the fashion was for no fire places. Hardy any power sockets either which is a bit surprising as electricity was hardly a new invention back in the early 70’s so it must have been obvious electricity would be here to stay. Consequently the rooms in this house have a rather plain box feel about it. It’s also rented so whipping out a wall and building in a fireplace isn’t something I can or want to do. But winter is knocking at the door and I want to be cosy. Queue cheating in the form of a pretend fireplace. I literally popped into the local DIY store, very kind lad put it in the car and then took home and unpacked it. No fiddling, no putting together just removed cardboard and plug in. I am amazed with the result and it looks like it has been there for the last 40 years. Cosy wintery/Christmassy evenings can now commence. Though there are a few other things needs to make a proper winter/Christmas evening so here is my essential list:
Cosy Room – this can be the lounge or bedroom but no harsh lighting so we switch off the main lights and use side lights and candles. The candles (used responsibly of course) tick several boxes as they give cosy lighting, do give off some heat and if you have scented candles they give off a lovely Christmassy smell. The curtains are drawn, doors shut and huddle down around the new fire.
Soft Blankets – I just can’t sit on the sofa without a blanket on my lap. It has to be soft and huge as there is often two cats fighting for my lap and one of the teens sneaking in the side for warmth.
PJ’s or as they are known in our house ‘comfies’ – Basically the softer and more comfortable it is the better. My current favourite are red leopard print fleece trousers and any warm woolly jumper. Not exactly the epitome of sexy. I think perhaps I should put some posh pj’s on my Christmas list so if one of the teens has strayed onto here I want these comfy Calvin Klein Flannel PJ’s please.
A Winters or Christmas film – How the Aussies do Christmas in the sun is beyond me. As winter lashes it full force outside I want to be watching snowy scenes with the odd fir tree and snowman added in for good measure. I certainly don’t want to see skimpy bodies in skimpy bikinis as I hide under thick socks and tights and jumpers.
Snacky Food and Hot Chocolate – If I shouldn’t be eating it then its got to be on the list. If I can’t have the odd nice thing to eat in the winter months when everything is safely hidden in big jumpers then when can I. Of course the hot chocolate has to have those diddy marshmallows too.
Now that’s what is on my list, what’s on your list?
