Many people that start home-based businesses do so by involving their entire families in the venture. Startup capital is one of the biggest drawbacks of starting a home-based business. So when you’ve got more people throwing in money, you’ll find it’s a lot easier to get your business up and running. That’s the main advantage to bringing in family members to help with your home-based business. This may be the very action that keeps you from having to take out a small business loan.
Another advantage to having family members as a part of your home based business is that there should be all the help you need when things start to get busy. You won’t have to find people to hire part-time and spend out extra money to pay them. There also shouldn’t be a problem with training because all of your family members should already know how to run things.
When you have family members helping you run a home based business you should all be able to take time off when needed. You can actually keep your business up and running 24/7 because there will be plenty of people to keep it going. Everyone should be able to get a decent amount of time off while also keeping the business going all the time. That’s a definite advantage that your business will over your competitors.
While there are many great things about having a business that runs in the family, there can also be some issues. To begin with, there will always be someone that wants to be the one in charge, and the problem with that is that there may be MORE than one person that wants to run the show all the time. Granted, there does need to be someone in charge of making decisions and other important things, but when there are too many people in charge and not enough workers, there can be some major problems. That’s why it should be decided at the outset who will be the person making decisions. In that way, there shouldn’t be any issues down the road with this aspect of your business.
Money can become another issue when families are all a part of the same business. Eventually, one or more family members will start to feel that they should be getting a bigger cut of the profit. Therefore, this is another topic that should be discussed at the beginning. Then no one can start whining later about not making enough money. Obviously, the person that does the most work should be the one making the most money. But if everyone is working equally and getting equal pay, that should take care of any disagreements that may be brewing down the line.
The main thing to make family home-based businesses work is to talk things over and have firm agreements on key matters. When everything is addressed at the beginning and agreed upon, there’s no reason that a home-based business run by families can’t be a rousing success.
