Our dress tips from the range available online at House of Fraser
Thankfully the UK is not quite the ageist fashion culture it once was. With our life expectancies increasing, and more frequent coverage of women over the age of 25 (and not blond!) on television and public-facin media, this is the decade to look good and feel fabulous at 40.
What is more, the recession is also giving a boost to well-made, beautifully-designed but long-lasting clothing which appeals particularly to women who have passed their thirties for a better decade…and with a growing audience of shoppers who love to buy dresses online, department stores such as House of Fraser are really offering some excellent ideas and deals.
I’ve been really impressed this year with the launch of Mary Portas’ (of ‘Queen of Shops’ fame) debut collection, which has been sold through House of Fraser – and is currently part of the store’s widespread blue cross sale, which presents some outstanding bargains.
Her dresses are wonderful sources of inspiration for women in their forties and upwards who want to look fabulous and feel appropriate. It can be so disheartening to walk into a shop and not recognize yourself – your taste, your body shape, your look – in any of the clothes on offer.
But with the Mary Portas range – and indeed with the Therapy tea dresses and Linea evening gowns currently in the sale – I think we’ve found some really credible options for dressing for success.
The No-brainer dress (pictured), coming in a deep purple, red or black, is an excellent example of classic, timeless tailoring combined with quality fabric and contemporary detail. I’ve been refreshing the page on this item for many weeks, and finally all three colours of this dress are now in the sale.
For workwear, I often turn to Pied a Terre to inspiration – and brand which also makes wonderful shoes using Italian leather. Their well-cut dresses, which have nipped-in waists and pencil skirts that are both forgiving and complementary at the same time, are a consistent high-scoring favourite when it comes to my wardrobe.
