One of the best things about the festive is getting to see loved ones who we might not get a chance to see much of throughout the year. Christmas means visitors, and if yours are coming from out of town, it probably means hosting them for a few nights too. To ensure everyone is comfortable and feels at home, a nice guest bedroom is essential. Here are some of the upgrades you could make you yours ready for their arrival.

The Decor
A guest room is best to be decorated in a neutral theme which will appeal to the most people. It should look homely but without too many personal touches as some people might find it makes the room look cluttered. A piece of art, a plant or flowers, and some beautiful soft furnishings is all you need. If the walls are looking a little shabby or worse for wear, a coat of paint will freshen everything up and make it an inviting place for your guests.
The Bed
It can be tempting to opt for a cheaper bed for your guest room, especially since it probably isn’t used that often. But when people are staying away from home it can be a bit unsettling, so making sure they have a nice bed to sleep on will help them feel much more at ease. A supportive mattress, good quality bed linen and a couple of different pillows with different firmness levels is your bed bet. Some pillows and throws will make the room look cosy and warm, having an ottoman or basket somewhere for guests to put them out of the way when they’re not in use is a nice touch.
The Window Treatments
You’ve probably got the perfect window treatment for your own bedroom, but as you don’t sleep in the guest room, you’ve probably not put much thought into what’s up at the window here. The curtains might look nice enough, but do they block out the light efficiently? Light is one of the most powerful stimuli to wake you up, so without this sorted your guests are probably going to end up having a very early awakening. Go with some blackout blinds; these are great as you can adjust the light to keep the room bright and airy during the day and then keep it nice and dark in the morning. You can make the window area look more complete by then adding curtains over the top. These could be for decorative reasons, or to add another layer against the sun to make the room even darker.
Storage
If guests are staying for a few days or longer, you don’t want them to be living out of a suitcase! Depending on the size of the room you could add a wardrobe and some hangers. Or at the least, a hanging rail to keep clothes neat and free of wrinkles. A small chest of drawers and a bedside table will make the room look complete and provide additional space too.
Finishing Touches
You could add a plaque or wall hanging to the room with the code to your wifi on it. That way your guests can browse at their leisure. You could add a tray with some snacks and essentials such as bottles of water. If you think your guests will be too polite to mention that they are hungry, then this is a good option. Don’t forget things like lamps or additional lighting options for the evenings. If your guest room has an ensuite bathroom, you could provide some nice quality toiletries and pampering products for them to use. You could even purchase a couple of different phone chargers for popular phone models in case anyone forgets theirs. You can buy them really cheaply on eBay. Other ways you could finish the room and make it nice for your guests is to add a room fragrance. Something like a plug-in air freshener is good as if they find the scent too powerful it can simply be switched off at the wall. Reed diffusers are more subtle but a nice way to bring in a delicate fragrance.
When you’re planning your guest room, you could think of it almost like a hotel. What kind of amenities and essentials do you like to be provided with when you’re staying away from home? What will make it the most comfortable and inviting space for your guests?
