You don’t need me to tell you what it’s like out there for UK singles – between putting on your dancing shoes, reading specs, and logging in online to find Mr Right, it can start to feel like you’ve tried everything. A single successful or dreary night can often lead to making generalisations that somehow stick with you, like being convinced that men from a certain country or even town would be much better for you than the local rag-tag bunch. Thinking along exactly the same lines as us, Posh Bingo has created a seriously smart infographic that looks at just how the UK dating market works – and how we all fit in.
This nicely presented study from my favourite UK bingo site takes data from sources like the BBC, Marie Claire and the Daily Mail to expose a whole series of statistics, and the results might surprise you. For instance, did you know Manchester has the highest percentage of singles, at 71%? Guess that explains the famous nightlife!
The numbers show we’re all getting comfortable with online dating, but it’s amazing to see that the older demographic are leading the way. Users aged 55+ make up the most active percentage of online daters, sending an impressive message to everyone else about being willing to try out new things. The infographic does show that 62% of us have tried out online dating though, so that’s more than half the population! It’s quite encouraging when you think back on how people’s views have changed over ten years, and I know plenty of people now who actually met their husband or long-term partner online.
If you’re looking for something a little more short-term, the infographic finishes on a much cheekier note, surveying which region’s men are best in bed! The results might surprise you – Tyne and Tees bagged the most popular lover award, with 21% of women voting the North East’s men as best. It isn’t time to bolt up north just yet though, since London came close behind with 18%.
The infographic had some tips on what men really want, too, and it turns out it doesn’t seem as unrealistic as we might’ve feared. We don’t have to be supermodels after all – they don’t mind if we’re a little overweight, they’d just like us to prefer sweets to pies and enjoy a glass of wine rather than beer. I’ve certainly got the last one covered! Interestingly, 66% of men also preferred confident drivers, too, so I’ll be sure to use that on the next man who criticises female drivers!
Personally I’m pretty excited to get out there are start testing these stats for myself – it’ll make a great conversation starter at any rate! Posh Bingo getting involved in the debate just proves to me how much all these internet sites are linking up to help bring us the facts, and it really does make sense. My chat-room conversations while playing bingo online haven’t led to a date yet, but as people get more and more comfortable with online dating, who knows what could happen? I’ll just have to find a subtle way to ask if he happens to have a northern accent first…

Great post. I can’t believe that 62% of the population have tried internet dating. That’s loads! I tried the website single parent dating. Not sure I would recommend it!
