If you are a regular reader you will know that although this blog is called Confessions of a Single Mum I do have a partner. Nothing odd about that really but the slightly odd bit is that, and why I still class myself as a single parent, is that although we have been together over 9 years we don’t live together. Even odder is that we have no plans or desire to live together. We have chosen this set up, it’s what we want.
This sort of set up isn’t that unique though and its a trend that is growing in popularity. In 2001 there were 1.78 million people between ages 45 and 64 living solo. By 011 this number had jumped to 2.4 million. There are also more women living singularly in Britain than there are men.
What I do find is funny is that if I tell anyone of my situation most people responses is that they think its brilliant, modern, tell me not to change and congratulate me. I know this set up isn’t for everyone but if you do want some tips on living solo, here are my tips.
Enjoy the alone time – As the children get older and have busy social lives or spend more time at Dads etc don’t rush around just doing housework and catching up on errands. Enjoy being alone. Enjoy having the TV on whatever channel you want. Enjoy the stillness and peacefulness.
Look after your friendships – good friends, like good wine. will be there for you in the good bits and the bad bits. Friendships don’t just happen though whilst you’re sitting on your arse. Nurture your friendships.
Live like you’re a star – starring in your own film. Bother with make up and doing your hair, clothes etc. Even buy yourself flowers or small treats. Cook proper meals and set the table. Do it all for you.
