Parents Learning Allowance could help you with things like travel and study materials. If you are a full time student with children you could get Parents Learning Allowance which can be worth up to £1,508 a year to help with learning costs. The money can be used towards books, study materials and travel. How much you get does depend on your income but it doesn’t have to be paid back, is paid on top of your other student finance and won’t affect your benefits or tax credit.
Eligibility
If you’re a student from England with dependent children you may qualify if you’re taking:
- a full-time undergraduate course
- an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course
You don’t need to be paying for childcare to qualify.
What You Could Get
Depending on your household income, in 2012 to 2013 you could get between £50 and £1,508 a year.
It’s usually paid in 3 instalments direct to your bank account, one at the start of each term.
How to Claim
You can apply for the Parents’ Learning Allowance when you apply for student finance.
After you apply
After you apply you’ll get a letter telling you how much you can get.
At the end of the academic year you’ll be asked to complete a Confirmation of Income form. This is to make sure you’ve been paid the right amount.
