If you’re looking to get away from it all with a family break, getting trains to Devon might be the perfect way to do it. England’s south west has plenty to offer throughout the year, so don’t feel you need to wait until next summer to pay a visit. Here are a few things we think you might enjoy even in poorer weather:
Explore the National Aquarium
Plymouth is home to the National Aquarium, so if you’re staying in south Devon it’s well worth popping along to see and learn about a huge variety of sealife. It’s open from 10am to 5pm between the beginning of October and the end of March so why not consider taking your family along for a day out? During your visit you’ll be able to find out about everything from the nearby Plymouth Sound to the oceans elsewhere in the world, as well as being able to see a variety of creatures that inhabit them of course.
Head to Dartmouth
A trip to Dartmouth offers plenty of good ways to stay entertained in poor weather, including its castle, a museum, shops and galleries. The castle is well worth a visit, stood as it is in a picturesque location guarding the entrance to the Dart estuary. It’s open for visitors between April and November but that’s not to say those with train tickets to Devon can’t still enjoy it from the outside from December to March.
The museum, meanwhile, is small but well worth a look and is set in an old merchant’s house dating back to around 1640. Inside you’ll find out about the how the town has changed over the years and discover more about the importance of the sea to its inhabitants.
Go underground in Exeter
Exeter is a great city in many ways, but one attraction that makes it particularly stand out from other places in the UK is its accessible network of underground tunnels. These were originally put in place to bring clean drinking water in, but are now available for the public to enjoy. So why not take your family on a guided tour, taking in the interesting and interactive heritage centre before you set off on your adventure.
