Whether for a birthday, wedding or anniversary, a homemade cake will add a special touch. So don the apron and dust off the whisk because practice makes perfect and you can never have too much cake. Don’t know where to start? First pick up your craft supplies from Craft Superstore, and read below for some inspiration.
Give it a theme – Cakes come in all shapes, sizes and designs, so choose your theme and then design your cake around it. Perhaps choose the recipient’s favourite film and create the likes of an Alice in Wonderland or Frozen inspired masterpiece. If a sport or hobby is more their thing, you could design a football-themed cake or perhaps a camera for the photographer in your life. Whatever theme you choose take it as inspiration and not literally and you will produce a cake that really has the wow factor!
Size doesn’t matter – A cake doesn’t have to be large to impress! Cupcakes can be equally impressive and perhaps an easier place to start if you are new to baking. They can either feature individual designs, or use a selection to create a larger design. For example, if you are baking for a baby shower, each cake could feature a different new baby inspired design. Cupcakes are also perfect to spell out the recipient’s name or a special message. They can feature exactly the same designs and fillings as a larger cake, just on a more bite-size scale.
Bake for the occasion – Think about the occasion or season and how this can be incorporated into your cake. Whether you bake a snow scene to spread Christmas cheer, a spooky set of cupcake ghosts to frighten your Halloween guests or simply add mini eggs for an Easter treat with a twist.
The fancy filling – You have already impressed with the outside, but don’t forget about the inside. Wow the crowd when your cake is cut into with a hidden surprise. Think basic chocolate chips, flavoured buttercream or popping candy for a taste sensation. Or, if you are feeling more adventurous, multi-layers of colour, an outpouring of fruit, chocolate or sweets or a fancy unexpected design will ensure a cake that looks too good to eat!
Sweeten it up! – Use chocolate and sweets to decorate your cake. Not only will these add a great taste to your already delicious cake they are also a handy and easy way to decorate. Why not use chocolate chips for eyes or smarties to design a colourful outfit?
If you are not feeling overly adventurous with your design, sweets can also make a seemingly basic cake instantly more impressive. Use chocolate fingers to separate sections of your cake and then place the recipient’s favourite sweets on top. Simple, and yet deliciously effective!
