A small garden doesn’t mean you can’t have the garden you want. But if you are not a budding gardener, deciding what to do with it can be difficult.
Don’t leave it to become an overgrown area that you avoid being in, because you feel it is too small to do anything with. A small garden is actually the perfect place to get started, and help you to discover your green fingers.
You may be surprised to discover how much you can do with it! You don’t even need grass to have a garden you want to show off. In fact, a lawn will only exemplify how little room you have, whereas paving slabs can make the space look larger and still leave you with plenty of options.
So, grow your skills alongside your plants with these small garden ideas for beginners:
Choose your plants wisely: When choosing plants for your garden be aware of how big it will grow and how far it will spread. Too many large plants in a small space will only make it feel smaller. Pick a range of colourful and patterned containers, for small trees or flowering bedding plants. Not only will your garden be easier to maintain, you can revamp the design whenever you wish.
Section off your space: Divide your garden into sections and create hidden areas. Even in a small space an arch, for example, can be used to separate areas of your garden. This will make it feel bigger as you can’t see everything!
Grow your dinner: It is easy to start growing your own dinner and will also add colour to your garden. Dedicate plant pots or a vegtrug to tomatoes, strawberries, peppers – anything that tickles your tastebuds!
Welcome wildlife: Even small gardens can be a haven for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. A birdhouse, feeder and bath will take up little room in your garden, but will work to create a wildlife-friendly space.
Think off the ground: Walls, fences and windows can all be used for plant life. Use a trellis to help plants grow up the wall and utilise this unused space to double the amount of pants you can have. Walls are also ideal for hanging baskets, which are ideal to practice planting different flowers.
Add a touch of colour: Think bright and vibrant colours when you are choosing your plants. This won’t only bring the space to life, but will distract from how small it is!
Take the indoors out: Adorn the space with accessories from fairy lights and candles to soft furnishings and mirrors. The space is then essentially an extension of the rooms in your home, with the benefit of fresh air on a summer’s evening! Mirrors are particularly good for small gardens as they give the illusion of more space than there is.
Be clever with your furniture: Chairs and tables that can be folded up and put away will reduce clutter and give you that little bit extra space when you need it!
Good things come in small packages and no matter how small your space there are plenty of ways to make it feel bigger and tranquil!
