For the last 6 years, I thought I was dieting. I thought I was being really healthy and claimed I was the healthiest I had ever been and couldn’t understand why I was putting on weight. I surely must be a medical oddity. Pah yeah right to all of that.
First of all most the food I was eating – actually, all the food I was eating was processed. I think the healthiest thing I ate was bowls of fruit – yay, covered in yogurt – not so yay with chocolate sprinkles to reward myself for being good – er what the heck?! Fruit by itself is fine as long as you eat as it should be i.e as if you just picked it. When you start mucking around with it like making smoothies or juicing it then your kidding yourself it’s healthy. But we still convince ourselves it’s healthy as at some point in its life it was a piece of fruit. And just don’t get me started on the amount of sugar that is in yogurt.
Food is good for us, we need it for the little things in life like breathing, living and standing up. But when we change how its supposed to be like frying it, juicing it and getting rid of the skin ( apples) and generally adding a ton of sugar on it, we then act all surprised that it made us put weight on. Naughty food, how dare it to jump into our mouths like that.
So if it’s not bad enough were mucking around with it all then we expect our bodies to accept huge amounts of food as we upsize everything and keep shoveling it in. Big tip – if your body isn’t telling you it’s hungry why do we keep putting things in our mouths? Stop it.
I have figured this all out in the few weeks I have been on WW. I am no nutritionist or diet guru and never will be. But it’s only taken a few weeks on ww for me to realize what we eat makes a huge difference to our waistlines and how much we eat is just as bad.
We assume that because a food manufacturer makes a product that we are supposed to eat it. We assume that a food manufacturer knows all about portion size so we don’t have to think about it. Think outside the flippen box a second. Why do food manufacturers make food products? To make money. End of. If there was no profit in something the don’t make it anymore. They are not making food products out of the love of mankind or from the goodness of their hearts. They want your money. So if they can create a food product we all love and keep buying they are going to keep making it. They put sugar in it to make it taste good but also to feed the addictive side in all of us. They say coming off sugar is up there with coming off cocaine. And we happily put this stuff, sugar, into our mouths? Into our children? We keep buying the sugar loaded product so the food manufacturers keep rubbing their hands taking your money and keep producing.
3 weeks of scanning my food into my ww app have made me realize the portion sizes I use to eat were enough to feed a small family. Now I know what 40g of cereals or pasta actually is I am reducing my portion sizes. Yes, I am hungry but that’s because my body thinks it needs 2 or even 3 times the amount I am giving it. It doesn’t – hence why I am 3 stone overweight. It has also taught me that sugar loaded foods mean higher points. Yes, I can eat it if I want but why eat one small thing with lots of sugar when I can eat lots of other foods with less sugar?
Before you hit the comment box telling me you’re a busy mum and there is no way you have time to grow your own tomatoes, pick them and make them into your own tomato sauce…I totally agree and I will still eat cereals and buy and use some processed foods. I totally get it. What I am saying is food manufacturers will only make what we demand. We are demanding highly processed foods but wondering why we are fat. We are having bigger portions and second portions and wonder why we are fat. The world is getting fatter because we are demanding it and letting it happen to ourselves.
Good grief I am this annoying at 3 weeks in I can only imagine I am going to be worse after my first stone loss. I am currently at half a stone gone , long way to go yet.
