Newspaper headlines no longer give us news but rather try to shock us to the core. They have become so sensational you have to know the code to find the real headline they have hidden because, I can only assume, plain English doesn’t work anymore.
We no longer have a nice sunny spell forecasted instead its scorcher like we have never known before or a heatwave to beat all records. Seriously? It was one day of sun and I barely made it into short sleeves. A dusting of snow is now known as a full blown, risk to all elderly and the infirm, don’t travel unless you really have to blizzard.
The famous and infamous celebs no longer just do things, they seem to, on daily bases, fear for their lives, their living and pets life too. They can no longer just do a good turn, give to charity or just walk down the street and smile without someone expressing their ‘jaw-dropping’, ‘must see’ and the favorite of the moment ‘blown away’ shock at it.
Cute babies and animals aren’t being left out of the sensationalism either. Empty promises of ‘heart melting’, ‘heart stopping’ and ‘what happens next is incredible’ moments fill social feeds. Not once has my heart melted or stopped and very little has reached the ranks of incredible for me. I haven’t fought back the tears, seen anything epic or that extraordinary and trust me I really can wait to see what he, she or they do next.
Maybe its a byproduct of the ever-increasing digital age. Plain English wasn’t getting things noticed so sensationalizing everything became the fashion? Does it mean that just as we all grew banner blind we will all become sensational blind too? Will good old simple words win the day and make a comeback? I do hope so as I for one am exhausted by it all.
